Today In Memory of Our Fallen…

Today while my family and I reflect on the memory of all our fallen hero’s that made the ultimate sacrifice for me and this country, we think back to just a few short days, less than a week ago… While we were in Hawaii we had the opportunity to visit the Pearl Harbor Museum.  It was an amazing place, and one that made you realize (even if it was small) how horrific and life changing that day was.  I admit that I didn’t take as many pictures as I normally do, it was such a sacred place… quiet, full or reflection, respect and sadness.

Pearl Harbor

There was a woman on our tour, sadly I didn’t get her name because I was listening in on her conversation with the couple in front of us, and she had been living on the island when the attack occurred.  Her husband was stationed at one of the different bases in Hawaii and she was sharing her memories of that morning, it was like listening to someone tell you about being in one of the World Trade Center buildings- it was hard to hear.

There was an amazing museum that we all went through, it had headphones with an audio tour for each exhibit and it was SO informative and made me connect with that moment in history.  There were so many things to see, hear, touch, and feel.  My kids were in awe of the encrypting machine they used, they were amazed at how long it would take to decipher a message- (this coming from a kid that freaks if the page doesn’t load instantly.)

once we finished the audio tour we headed over to the actual USS Arizona, the only sub that couldn’t be raised from the ocean.  There was a silent apprehension as we rode on the boat to the monument of sorts… See the ship is almost completely under water, and there has been a platform built over top.  There are 150 people at a time that go into view this sacred under water tomb as there are still 900 service men that were lost on this vessel when it sank.  There is a list of all the service men that lost their lives that day posted on a monument inside the platform, I couldn’t believe how many there were.  See Pearl Harbor wasn’t the only port that was bombed that day, sadly that isn’t something I knew before this trip.  If I had learned it in school, it didn’t stick.  But experiencing it in this way has changed me forever, and my kids too.

pearH2

This is the front of the ship, those things popping up are the apparatuses that the BIG guns on the ship were housed, you know those big guns that look like the parts on top of tanks.  They could shoot seriously far, I can’t recall the exact distance but I remember thinking, WOW! that’s far.  It was humbling to be able to get a glimpse down into those compartments and see the frayed and damaged wiring and cables and imagine the chaos and fear that was filling the air and sea that day.

pearH3

Then from the inside of the platform you could see another smaller one that would most likely face the rear of the ship…  but can you see what else is there?

pearH4

We learned that there is still about 1-2 quarts of oil that seep out of this vessel every day.  You can see the bubbles of black oil floating in the water.  There have been no attempts to drain the ship of it’s oil, as to do so would disturb and violate the sacred tomb of these dear solders that have been laid to rest here in their watery graves. This experience has impacted me deeply and I have an even deeper and more profound respect for our military. I am eternally grateful for those men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for my freedoms… for your freedoms… for this county.  I am and will be forever grateful!

On this Memorial Day, I hope that you, your family and all of our service men and women have a very safe and happy day filled with love and family.  Remember those that have fallen and pay respect in the best way that you know how.

HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY

Registering Made Easy!

I have heard lately, that getting signed up for my local and online classes comes with a bit of difficulty… and that makes me sad. I know that navigating different sites can be a little confusing for everyone, at first but once you get familiar with layouts and such things get much easier. So let me help you out.

questions

FIRST- it’s always easier to see my options and header menus when viewing my site on an actual computer… laptop or such. When using your mobile devices it changes the viewing and the options you can view. My header menu becomes a drop down screen that you have to open to see and the side bar disappears completely… so first recommendation is to use at least an iPad mini or larger device or better yet a laptop or computer.

SECOND- use the helpful tutorial (link below) that I created will make things a bit easier… it provides screen shots of each step to help you feel more confident about the process. There aren’t that many really, but if you are doing this for the first time (or infrequently enough) you might be leery of moving on, fearful that you didn’t do something right? (TIP: add this tutorial link to your FAVORITES so you can access it anytime without having to search for the link)

questions2

One thing that I did update, to make things easier is how you get your FREE CLASS CODE from me…

see when you submit a qualifying purchase from my STAMPIN’ UP! ONLINE STORE of $45 (prior ship/tax) you automatically earn a FREE CLASS, it can be a LOCAL CLASS or ONLINE CLASS…

I used to have to send you codes to redeem which slowed down the process and the codes would sometimes get misplaced and lost and it was a lot to keep track of for both parties… but now it will be easier!!

Now when you submit a qualifying purchase and earn your free class you will use the ORDER # from your online purchase that Stampin’ Up! provides you in their confirmation email of your order. Your email looks like this:

abcd

Your personal discount code will be valid to use on my blog in 24 hours after your purchase.  Your ORDER # (highlighted above) will be the class discount code you will use at the check out screen for my classes. Simply put that 8 digit number in as your COUPON CODE on MY check out page… the one that looks like this:

A2014BlogPic-016

Note that if you submit a $90 order that gets you 2 free classes, or submit a $180 order and get 4 free classes…  it simply means that your discount code will be valid for as many classes as your purchases qualify you for.  There is nothing special you have to do on your end, except keep track or your order #’s.  Once you use all the free classes you have associated with that order #/discount code your code will no longer be accepted by my blog.

Another source of confusion was knowing the difference between MY BLOG and MY STAMPIN’ UP! ONLINE STORE. See my blog is managed and maintained by yours truly… but my SU STORE is managed by Stampin’ Up! These are 2 completely different sites, even though you can actually get to my SU STORE through my BLOG they are separate. I hope that helps.

Watercolor Shadows Technique Video

Creating shadows and highlights isn’t as hard as you may think, and accomplishing a watercolor technique for your cards shouldn’t be left to only professionals… anyone can do it!  In fact I think water coloring is one of the easiest techniques to start with, because what you see as mistakes are actually effects that you WANT in a water colored project.

Here is a quick snap shot of the sample that Stampin’ Up! created in this new technique video they shared last week.

water color shadows and highlights techniques

I know this pic isn’t great… but you get to see a better version of it in the video.  What I think is awesome about this technique is that it doesn’t require a LOT of color to be beautiful and it doesn’t require a ton of expertise either… the darker areas will be along the sides giving you the illusion that the light is coming at the front of the object.

You can see that with a little ink smushed onto the lid of the container and an AQUA PAINTER  you can color to your hearts content.  Remember that one of the tale-tale signs of water color is to leave a little white space…

water color shadows and highlights techniques

The apples are done the same exact way…  Simply adding the most color to the outer edges of the apple images and leaving the area with the most light completely free of ink… remember that this technique should be done with an image that has been stamped in Stazon ink, that will keep the image from becoming muddy as it’s waterproof.

water color shadows and highlights techniques

Of course Stampin’ Up! created an awesome video that shows you exactly how to create this effect, have a look and enjoy!  If you are viewing this post through your inbox, CLICK HERE to view the video on my blog.

I will be posting updates and sneak peeks of upcoming class and event projects in the upcoming days… don’t miss out on being able to create them yourself- come to a class or event if you are local and if not then join me online with any of my online classes.  I would love to get inky with you! Getting Sketchy with New Stamps!

I can’t wait to share the adorable card I created for this months Sketch Challenge with Hand Stamped Sentiments, I created it using a little something old (retiring actually) and something new!  Sooo cute, and making this cute little card was a total breeze- let me share how…

Wow, what a whirlwind of a day yesterday was… I arrived back in TX at around 3 AM and then got about 2 hours of sleep before my normal day started.  Yes, I am that mom who made her kids go to school after a trip like that, LOL!!  Of course I totally forgot to get this project completed before I left, so I needed a card that was simple and packed a punch- and I think that I achieved it.

HSS1

I love this card, the designer paper I used will be going away as of June 2nd… it’s called BIRTHDAY BASH and it’s one of the newest WEEKLY DEAL items this week!  I love this paper cause it coordinated so well with several of the upcoming In-Colors that will arrive in June.  I used the new Watermelon Wonder ink and card stock to create my adorable ice cream cone image, complete with punches…

Simple Ice Cream Card made wit I Think you're Great Set, new in 2015!

To create the ice cream I stamped the image for the top using the soon to be released I THINK YOU’RE GREAT set, and I used the TREE PUNCH for the cone… the proportions of the two are perfect!  And check out the sketch that we are using for inspiration this month…

HSS logo

Of course I couldn’t call this project complete without adding a little DAZZLING DETAILS in the word and around the edges… I also added the MY FRIEND sentiment from another new set called YOU’RE SO SWEET- these sets are so amazeballs it’s ridiculous!!

Simple Ice Cream Card made wit I Think you're Great Set, new in 2015!

I hope you liked this project and I hope that you pop over to play along with us at HSS this month, it’s super easy and you could be named one of the artist picks for playing along.  I have said it before, I love creating with a road map and that’s exactly what a sketch is… it’s a template to get your creative juices flowing.

Be sure to check out ALL the WEEKLY DEALS that began today, there so many awesome ones!

How to Make Different Sized Cards Tutorial

Aloha!! I am really enjoying the spirit of the islands, and I can’t believe how long we were awake yesterday.  We started the day at 3 AM and made it to bed at 2 AM TX time… which was about 10ish here in Hawaii.  Today we are visiting the Polynesian Cultural Center, SO EXCITED!!

I have a fun project to share with you today, this is the thank you card I made for my Pico sitter this week. It is just big enough to fit a gift card to her favorite nail place and I have some FUN things to share with you about it…

Remember when I shared this project with you-

HAPPY Birthday Balloon Bash little letters alphabet thinlits and Sew You exclusive set

I basically recreated this Birthday card (on a slightly smaller size) for my Thank you.  I have a how to video tutorial for you from a special request from a fellow stamper.  She wants to know how to cut and create custom sized cards… something other than the standard A2 4-1/4″ x 5-1/2″ size.  Your wish is my command!  I created a simple video for you today.
